Composite Roof Tile Installation: Top 7 Common Mistakes

Composite Roof Tile Installation: Top 7 Common Mistakes

Mistake 1. Installation of the tile without displacement

It is not necessary to stack sheets of a tile one above another. This format “exposes” the boundaries of the transition and degrades the appearance of the roof.

Decision

The installation of sheets should begin from top to bottom in a checkerboard pattern with overhang. The tile fixed from above rises a little, and under it, the following sheet fastens.

As for the side joints, the displacement vector depends on the profile and the prevailing wind direction in the region. The direction of overhang should be maintained around the perimeter of the slope.

Mistake 2. Installation of the membrane inverse side

How is the roof of a house-made? Thermal insulation is laid between the rafters, on the rafters – a breathable under-roofing membrane, and then – the lattice and roofing material.

Such a seemingly trivial thing as improper installation of the membrane will lead to disaster. Instead of releasing warm, moist air, the film will work the other way around – moisture will start to accumulate in the insulation, which will impair its thermophysical properties.

Decision

Read the instructions carefully. Usually, on the front side of the membrane, the dotted line indicates the dotted strip. And the membrane itself is rolled into a roll face inward.

Mistake 3. You do not provide ventilation in the roof

Do you know how to make a mansard roof? If you do not provide ventilation in the room and on the roof, then in a cute room in the attic in the summer it will be impossible to live due to suffocation.

In addition, the lack of ventilated cracks in the attic space can lead to the fact that moisture that has appeared under the roof due to condensation or leakage will not be removed from the outside. This causes the appearance of mold and fungus on the rafters and lattice, which destroys the wood.

Decision

Consider normal ventilation at the design stage or when installing the roof. Three ventilation elements are required:

  • openings for fresh air supply,
  • a ventilated gap between the thermal insulation,
  • the roofing material for the circulation and removal of air from the house.

This will help extend the life of the attic structure and create a comfortable temperature in the house in any season.

Mistake 4. Cutting the composite tile with the wrong tool

Never do that. The composite tile should be cut with a guillotine or hand scissors on the metal. Otherwise, you are guaranteed to damage the decorative coating of stone crumbs and aluminizing protection, which will lead to corrosion in the places of cuts and greatly reduce the service life of the roof.

Decision

Call a professional with his own tools.

Mistake 5. Unevenly filled crate

How to make the right roof? Rafter bearing base plus roof, which is attached to the lattice. Unevenly filled lattice = unevenly filled roof. Tile sheets do not join, which leads to improper installation, and eventually to leakage in the rain.

Decision

The roof manufacturer’s recommendations in the installation instructions must be taken into account. The lattice step may be different for each profile.

Mistake 6. You do not pay attention to the adjustment

Joints are the most vulnerable place on the roof. If the integrity of the roofing pie is compromised, the roof will leak. Therefore it is especially important to pay attention to adjoining of roofing material to walls, chimneys, ventilating exits, dormer windows.

Decision

The recommendations in the roof installation instructions must be strictly followed. Be sure to perform all bends on the tile at the joints.

Mistake 7. Moving on the roof during installation

Shoes with a hard sole, as well as incorrect movement on the roof can damage (scratch, bend, rub) the roofing material.

Also, in order not to deform the tile, we advise not to step on the ridge and convex elements, do not move on the lowest part of the bend of the tile.

Decision

You should walk on the roof in shoes with a soft rubber sole, and step on the composite tile – only in those places where the lattice passes. Try to minimize movement on the roof.

Laying of sheets do from top to bottom, in that case on the established sections of a tile there will be no need to step anymore.

To avoid mistakes in the process of laying composite tiles, we recommend that you contact experienced installers.
